Kharar is a city and a municipal council in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district in the state of Punjab. It is near Chandigarh and is often referred to as “Greater Mohali” due to its close proximity to Mohali.

Kharar is known as the education hub of Punjab since it has many engineering colleges and a medical college.

Kharar is a block situated in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar in Punjab. Positioned in the urban region of Punjab, it is among the 4 blocks of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. As per the government records, the block code of Kharar is 129. This block has 150 villages and there are a total of 44,620 families.

The Kharar city is divided into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Kharar Municipal Council has population of 74,460 of which 39,218 are males while 35,242 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

Derivation of Name “Kharar”

Perhaps, the name of Kharar is derived from “Khirni” tree which were abundant in this area. Presently, only two trees alive in Ambika Devi Mandir, Kharar.
